As a very young girl, the huge sprawling poster of “Cleopatra” in the front of the theater is etched in my memory. I remember my parents did not take me and my siblings because we were too small to watch the movie. What initiated me to do the search was recently I saw the movie "Clash of the Titans" over the weekend (which is a remake of a 1981 film that is remembered fondly for its impressive stop-motion animation).Went to see the remake since I had fond memories of going to the "original movie" with my siblings at SAFIRE Theatre in the 80's. During my last visit to Chennai when I saw the dilapidated building my heart sank. Sadly, one great landmark in Chennai which has lost complete relevance (Chennai history) thanks to the actions of people who have no clue as to the significance of that landmark. During my visit in 2003 I stayed at GRT and was frantically searching for Rajkumari theater because I had vivid memories of going with my uncle and siblings to “Guess who is coming to Dinner”. I was totally shocked to find out that it was demolished.
